Equal partners: September is Women in Medicine Month; it is a yearly reminder to consider the question, "What is the status of women in the medical profession?"(Editorial)
Article Abstract:
Women make up about 20% of the number of physicians in 1996, and 40% of medical students are female. Nevertheless, the average female doctor earns less than males, and fewer women occupy positions of leadership. To correct the imbalance, the American Medical Assn recommends mentoring programs to support women physicians, especially in relation to conflicts between career and family responsibilities. Other key strategies include giving women leadership training and academic opportunities.

Think local when reviewing employment contract
Article Abstract:
Physicians should use attorneys in the location to which they plan to relocate instead of attorneys in their home state because of differences in state laws and local customs. When negotiating new contracts, physicians and their lawyers should pay careful attention to non-competition clauses and to legal interpretations of those clauses. Other issues to consider are liability insurance and other benefits.
