Evaluation of a screening algorithm for the diagnosis of genital infections with Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis among female sex workers in Benin

Article Abstract:

A formula based on a combination of physical examination factors used to identify women infected with gonorrhea or chlamydia in third world countries does not appear to be consistently accurate. Physical factors used include a positive swab test, pus at the cervix, and irregular cells present in vaginal fluid. This formula was compared with laboratory results among 364 prostitutes examined in Benin. Formula results accurately identified only 57.9% of the infected women and appropriately eliminated only 61.2% of those not infected. The formula's accuracy was somewhat greater among women with additional infections.

Evaluation of Patient-Administered Tampon Specimens for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Article Abstract:

Two rapid PCR tests for the diagnosis of genital Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections in women appear to be effective. The tests both use a tampon to collect vaginal tissue samples for testing. Researchers evaluated Roche Cobas Amplicor and Abbott LCx (LCR) on 400 tampons and compared the results to an in-house PCR method. Both tests accurately identified all the women who had Chlamydia trachomatis, but LCR was less accurate than Amplicor in diagnosing gonorrhea.

Detection of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Swab Specimens by the Hybrid Capture II and PACE 2 Nucleic Acid Probe Tests

Article Abstract:

The Digene Hybrid Capture II (HC II) CT/GC Test appears to be more effective in diagnosing Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae in specimens taken from the female genital tract. Researchers used swabs to collect cervical specimens from 1,746 women and then compared the HC II CT/GC Test with the GenProbe PACE 2 System. The HC II CT/GC Test was 100% accurate in detecting these organisms compared to an 87% accuracy of the PACE 2 test.
