Exclusion of the elderly and women from coronary trials: is their quality of care compromised?

Article Abstract:

A research study found that elderly individuals and women may be more likely to be excluded from clinical trials of drugs to treat heart attacks than other individuals. Clinical trials are research studies that test new drugs in human volunteers before Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. The incidence of cardiovascular disease is increasing in the US with the growing elderly population. Preventative measures such as exercise and diet are postponing the development of cardiovascular disease until later in life. Drugs and procedures used to treat elderly patients are often tested on younger individuals. The development of cardiovascular disease may be significantly different in the elderly than in younger individuals. A need also exists to test drugs and procedures to treat cardiovascular disease on more women. Women are more likely than men to survive to an older age, and they usually develop cardiovascular disease later in life.
