Factors Correlated With Progression-Free Survival After High-Dose Chemotherapy and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Metastatic Breast Cancer

Article Abstract:

Many women with breast cancer may not benefit from aggressive chemotherapy followed by bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow transplants are used to replace the immune system, which is damaged by the chemotherapy. A study of 1,188 women who received this treatment revealed that many did not benefit from it. Risk factors for treatment failure included age of 45 years or more, prior chemotherapy, 3 or more metastatic sites, and incomplete response to initial chemotherapy. Only 4% of women with 3 or more risk factors survived for 3 years compared to 43% of those with no risk factors.
