Facts about leprosy

Article Abstract:

Leprosy, once thought incurable, but now treatable, is caused by the bacillus Mycobacterium leprae and is usually transmitted through extensive physical contact. The disease gets progressively worse if not treated. Multidrug therapy using dapsone, rifampicin and clofazimine is very effective.

Voluntary action and the continuing task in leprosy

Article Abstract:

The International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Assoc is a group of 20 voluntary organizations that provide medical and psychological help to leprosy patients worldwide. The group promotes the use of multidrug therapy, and is also conducts education and outreach efforts in affected communities.

Eliminating leprosy - a winnable war

Article Abstract:

The World Health Organization (WHO) has been recommending multidrug therapy in the treatment of leprosy since 1981. This extremely effective treatment has cured 8 million patients since 1986, and reduced the disease burden by 80%. WHO's goal is total eradication by 2,000, which is possible.
