Fee for service dying as big doctor groups take over L.A
Article Abstract:
Los Angeles, CA, where over 42% of the inhabitants belong to health maintenance organizations (HMOs), can be seen as a microcosm of what may happen in US medical care. Many physicians there are merging with hospitals and clinics, as fee-for-service medical care becomes increasingly difficult to maintain. Integrated systems involving physicians, insurers and hospitals are also on the rise. For example, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc claims 14% of all insured residents in Southern California as members. The HMO has its own hospitals, insurance company and medical group.

Border doctor's northern exposure lets him see both sides
Article Abstract:
Dr. Ian Thompson is manager of a Washington State clinic that treats cancer patients from Canada and the United States. Because British Columbia's health facilities are not ready for the large number of ambulatory cancer patients who require treatment, contracts were signed with Thompson's North Puget Sound Radiation Therapy Center, Bellingham, WA, and Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle. The centers welcome the increased revenue brought in by the Canadian patients.
