Practical matters: nurse education has come full circle in Swansea, where practice suites ae being used to each core skills
Article Abstract:
Opportunities for nursing student practice have been reduced due to the theoretical nature of Project 2000 and the increased workloads in practice areas. The Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Care at the University of Wales, Swansea, questioned the best setting in which to prepare nursing students for nursing, resulting in the reintroduction of practical rooms. The aim was to create opportunities for students to gain confidence in the use of actual equipment in a safe, controlled and supervised environment, before applying a skill to a patient.

Level the playing field. (part-time working)
Article Abstract:
Part-time nurses have a significant role in the NHS, although some managers see part time staff as unmotivated and less committed than full time staff. A part time nurse describes how a part time nursing team was set up to work with an established full time team in a ward, focusing on maintaining continuity of care. A questionnaire to part time trained nurses found that most wanted to undertake continuing education, but that study can be difficult unless evening courses are arranged to ease child care arrangements.
