Fluvoxamine for obsessive-compulsive disorder

Article Abstract:

The Food and Drug Administration approved a new treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder in 1995. Fluvoxamine (brand name Luvox) acts by changing the way the brain processes the neurotransmitter serotonin. Clinical trials have shown that it is more effective than a placebo but may be no more effective than clomipramine (Anafranil). Fluvoxamine does not cause many of the side effects that occur with other drugs in this class. However, it may interfere with the metabolism of other drugs, especially the benzodiazepines. People who are taking lithium, Tegretol and methadone maintenance treatment for heroin addiction should be careful when taking fluvoxamine. Fluvoxamine should also not be used in conjunction with MAO inhibitors.
