Food irradiation: they shoot gamma rays, don't they? (Environmental Health) (Column)_ (Column)
Article Abstract:
The argument over the irradiation of food to prevent food poisoning remains unresolved, with some scientists endorsing the process and the public remaining mostly unconvinced. In the US, the food irradiation process is approved for poultry, pork, vegetables, wheat, fruits and vegetables. The nation's first food irradiation plant belongs to Vindicator in Plant City, FL, which packages poultry using gamma radiation. Key problem in the irradiation debate remains the public perception that irradiated food is unsafe, but this is balanced by the fear of becoming ill from food poisoning.
