For better or for worse

Article Abstract:

Ward sisters are vital to the smooth running of hospitals and are perceived as role models. They are respected as managers and clinicians, taking on key roles as teachers, leaders and advocates for nurses and patients. Effective management which empowers staff by delegation and focuses on a patient-centered care approach will lead to a good balance between the dual roles of manager and clinician. The sister plays a key role in educating nursing staff, and she should be up-to-date with research as well as being aware she teaches by mimicry. The ward sister should be assertive, consistent and encouraging, while it should be recognised that she also needs support.
