Drug firms vow to tone down consumer advertisements

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has increased the number of warning letters it sends to pharmaceutical companies about false or misleading ads due to growing distrust of the ads, and tighter regulatory scrutiny. Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) in 2005 announced guidelines that ask the group's member companies to more accurately convey drug benefits and risks in their direct-to-consumer ads.

Medical researchers are facing scientific and regulatory obstacles after starting tests for antiaging drugs in clinical trials.
