From Billings to Bigelow
Article Abstract:
John Shaw Billings deserves a prominent place in American history because of his contributions to the establishment of library systems in the US. However, he remains an unknowm persona even in the very institution which flourished under his directorship, the New York Public Library. Billings also built the foundations for the famous National Library of Medicine. He was a former military surgeon who deserves due credit for developing the first volume of the Index Medicus still widely used in medical education.
