From Sydney to Siberia

Article Abstract:

Gini Gleissberg is one of the many UK nurses who have been attracted by the possibility of working abroad for a time to gain experience. She spent a year in Australia after qualifying but, after returning and pursuing her career in the UK, she had another invitation to go to Siberia to develop an ambulatory TB service. She trained the Russian nurses then returned to work as programme co-ordinator. Gleissberg found that the experience gave her more confidence, a more relaxed attitude, and more understanding of health care systems. Other nurses describe their experiences.

Persistent carer

Article Abstract:

A 74-year-old retired nurse, Rene MacKay, was so shocked by the lack of official support for older people in her London, England, community that she helped set up a steering group to avoid further neglect of the vulnerable elderly in the community. Two cases which shocked her were those in which bodies of old people were found decomposed in their homes several months after their deaths. MacKay cares for elderly people on an individual level, has set up a community group for them, and works locally on numerous committees campaigning for better services for older people.

Clear as mud

Article Abstract:

Community psychiatric nurses (CPN) need the law to be clarified as to their legal position when administrating medicines without the assistance of a pharmacist. Many CPN are placed in the position of having to administer drugs in difficult situation, leaving them open to legal redress should things go wrong. It is hoped the medical governing body of the UK will commit to clearing up the ambiguities of the Medicines Act 1968 by 2000, which will make life much easier for CPNs.
