GPs behaving badly: many GP practices are flouting employment law and operating discriminatory recruitment policies against nurses
Article Abstract:
Some GPs are violating employment laws, and this is already affecting practice nurses. It may also affect community nurses when changes arising from the government's white paper Primary Care: Delivering the Future, are implemented. The proposals could make it easier for GPs to directly employ community nurses, who will lose the relative security of being employed by a trust. Many practice nurses do not have written contracts and trusts will often not challenge GP fundholders to avoid losing contract income.

Nursing gets family-friendly
Article Abstract:
The UK National Health Service (NHS) is seeking to improve child-care facilities for its nursing staff with young children. Research by nursing union Unison reported a lack of child-care was cited by 11.4% of nurses who were preparing to leave the NHS. Many child-care facilities offer cover during normal working hours but this does not meet the needs of shift workers. There is also a limited number of places in NHS Trust creches, which has to be addressed by health trusts. Annualized systems allow nurses to contract for a set amount of work hours per year, with built in flexi-time.
