Goodbye to gagging: know your rights
Article Abstract:
Nurses face a confusing array of laws and regulations governing their conduct, many of which fail to provide adequate protection against situations encountered on a daily basis. Nurses and midwives are provided with the General Whitely Council Handbook which contains all legal facts pertaining to pay, hours and working rights. The introduction of the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 will give more protection to nurses who wish to report negligence or malpractice incidents without fear of retaliation from colleagues or management.

State of the unions
Article Abstract:
Lack of interest from their members has caused health service unions to examine their role as protectors of nurses rights. They acknowledge that the professional insurance they provide may be of more importance to many nurses. Recent disagreements between individual nursing unions, who have been making their own arrangements with trust managements, have weakened the overall negotiating position. Reluctance by nurses to resort to strike action has also made bargaining difficult.

Enrolled and endangered: a survey of nurses and employers suggests grim times ahead for those enrolled nurses who cannot, or will not, convert
Article Abstract:
A survey has indicated that there will be difficulties ahead for enrolled nurses (ENs) who do not undertake a conversion course, with limited or non-existent career opportunities. Almost half of the ENs surveyed felt pressurized to convert, although there are insufficient conversion courses, and it is unlikely that the target to complete conversion of the EN workforce by 2000 will be reached.
