Group ponders genomics and public health

Article Abstract:

The European Union (EU) has launched a new project to ensure that as public health systems exploit advances in genetics, the rights of individuals are protected. The Public Health Genomics European Network will not only identify where and how the EU has to approach challenges and changes posed by public health genomics but will also give concrete recommendations on how genome-based knowledge can responsibly and effectively be integrated into public health.

"European CDC" moves forward: Effort expected to help Europe fight epidemics

Article Abstract:

Senior health officials and politicians are putting efforts to establish a European Center for Disease Prevention and control (ECDC) to help Europe fight epidemics. The mission of the agency is to strengthen Europe's defense against infectious diseases such as SARS, influenza and HIV/ AIDS, by connecting the national disease control agencies and facilitating cooperation among them.

New European funding agency backs "blue-skies" research

The new European Research Council (ERC) funding agency is focusing on supporting fundamental 'blue-skies' research and grant proposals as per their quality and excellence. The ERC has $10 billion in funding from the European Commission through 2013, with 40% of the budget allocated for life sciences.Medical research assistance
