HMOs taking prevention to expansive new heights

Article Abstract:

Health maintenance organizations (HMOs) are instituting preventative health programs to cut costs and because of data that suggests that screening, vaccinations and other such measures lead to improved personal health. For example, Metropolitan Life Insurance Co has established separate mens' and womens' preventative health programs in its HMOs. The mens' program is designed to screen for testicular cancer, colon cancer and heart disease. Other HMOs offer programs for pregnant women, youth, and Medicaid-covered newborns.

Despite promises of funding, barriers to prevention linger

Article Abstract:

Preventive medicine will probably be a major component of national health care reform because it is less expensive in the long term than remedial care. Immunizations and some screening tests are likely to be among the services provided in any basic national health care package. Few physicians currently provide consistent preventive health services; for example, only a third of general internists provide comprehensive preventive services to women age 45 or older.

Advocates push for public health dollars

Article Abstract:

Public health advocates are seeking to increase federal spending on public health programs as the Clinton Administration plans health care reform. Although some public health measures such as immunization will probably be included in a basic benefits package, public health experts are campaigning for 6% of all health spending to be earmarked for public health programs. These would include disease surveillance, data collection and health education.
