Heat-Related Illnesses and Deaths--Missouri, 1998, and United States, 1979-1996
Article Abstract:
An average of 381 people die every year from hyperthermia caused by hot weather and high humidity. The elderly, disabled, homebound, and children are at especially high risk when the heat index exceeds 105 for a sustained period. CDC reports several cases in which people died in buildings equipped with air conditioning, but unusued in order to save electricity costs. People in hot climates should drink liberally, spend time in air-conditioned buildings, take cool bathes, and avoid exertion when temperatures are highest. Family members and friends should check on at-risk people to ensure that they take appropriate precautions.

Trends in Infectious Disease Mortality in the United States During the 20th Century
Article Abstract:
Deaths from infectious disease began to climb again in the 1980s after dropping for most of the 20th Century. Mortality from infectious disease decreased from 797 deaths per 100,000 people in 1900 to 36 deaths per 100,000 people in 1980. The rate then increased to 63 deaths per 100,000 by 1995 and decreased to 59 deaths per 100,000 in 1996. Throughout the century, pneumonia and influenza caused the greatest number of deaths, followed by tuberculosis. The increase in infectious disease mortality since 1980 was mostly due to HIV infection.
