Hepatitis B vaccine urged for all infants, adolescents

Article Abstract:

Articles in the October 18, 1995 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Assn indicate that all infants should receive vaccination against hepatitis B; for those who were not innoculated as babies, vaccination in adolescence is also medically and economically viable. In addition, perinatal transmissions can be reduced by half by treating babies whose mothers have tested positive for a hepatitis B antigen, saving $41.8 million in medical and work-lost costs. Infant innoculation would save an additional $19.7 million, while adolescent immunization would save $3.5 million.

Confronting medicine's glass ceiling

Article Abstract:

Female physicians continue to face education and job discrimination. For example, they earn one-third less than their male counterparts and comprise just 3% of medical school department heads. In addition, few medical researchers are women. The American Medical Society has adopted ten points to eliminate discrimination; for example, it suggests that immediate action be taken to increase the number of women in leadership roles in medical schools. In addition, blind peer review should be instituted for research fund applications and at journals.

Researchers ask FDA to regulate tobacco as a drug

Article Abstract:

Antitobacco physicians hope that new studies published in the British Medical Assn journal Tobacco Control will convince the FDA to declare tobacco a drug. The studies' authors contend that smokeless tobacco makers deliberately alter the product's chemical content and take other steps to encourage users to become addicted. By naming tobacco a drug, the FDA could regulate nicotine levels.
