Higher benefits costs bring headaches for doctors

Article Abstract:

United States businesses reduced health care 1991 expenditures by shifting costs to employees and using more managed care plans. Increased health care costs pushed the median deductible for individual coverage from $150 to $200 while average maximum out-of-pocket-expenses for families rose from $2,000 to $2,100. Individual employee costs rose a small amount to 13% in 1991. Efforts collect payments directly from patients and the increased amount of paperwork from new managed care plans has created a strain on physicians. Ways to reduce the physician's paperwork strain include the use of user friendly systems.

Failed health plans leaving doctors with unpaid claims

Article Abstract:

Physicians and hospitals must protect themselves from losses that result from failure or fraud on the part of health insurance plans. A health plan is suspect if its prices are too low, if an out-of-state third-party administers it, or if the insurer is not licensed in the plan's state. State insurance department investigations reveal that some sham unions and multiple-employer welfare arrangements, not closely supervised, may be set up by fraudulent operators.
