It takes a community...to lower the STD rate

Article Abstract:

A 1997 awards program was held to recognize community-based programs to halt the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). These programs attempt to reach people who would not normally visit a medical clinic. Among the programs that won awards was one that has trained the staff of 117 businesses to provide STD services to their customers. Another program brought STD awareness to women prisoners and a third to 400,000 urban and rural residents in Hidalgo County, Texas. About 12 million new STD cases occur in the US each year, one of the highest rates in developed countries.
