Homicide and Suicide Rates Associated With Implementation of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act

Article Abstract:

The implementation of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act in 1994 has not significantly reduced the rate of homicide or suicide using handguns. The only exception is the suicide rate among people 55 years old or older, which decreased slightly after passage of the bill.

Criminal records of homicide offenders

Article Abstract:

A study determined the portion of the homicide problems that would be addressed by interventions linked to arrest or conviction. The results suggested that interventions after arrest or conviction such as supervised release, imprisonment, correctional programs or bans on firearm possession are targeted towards a group that has relatively high incidence of lethal violence.

The Medical Costs of Gunshot Injuries in the United States

Article Abstract:

Gunshot injuries place a substantial burden on the health care industry. An analysis of data from several statistical databases revealed that the 134,445 gunshot injuries treated in the US in 1994 cost $2.3 billion. Half of this cost was paid by US taxpayers. The average medical cost per injury was $17,000. Three-quarters of the cost was linked to gunshot wounds sustained during an assault.
