How heavy is too heavy?

Article Abstract:

The 1988 'Joint Industry Guidelines for Dry Grocery Shipping Containers,' launched by the partnership of the the Food Marketing Institute, the Grocery Manufacturers of America along with their members, sets the maximum case weight limit to 50 pounds. However, the limit was based on product-damage statistics and not on biomechanics hence the services of Ohio State University's William Marras, a body-mechanics researcher, was contracted. His findings of a maximum limit of 40 pounds for cases without lifting aids, raised both positive and negative reactions from the industrial sector.

Deere employees take the reins

Article Abstract:

John Deere's comprehensive injury-and-illness analysis program revealed injury incidence could be reduced by upgrading company training programs. This led to the establishment of the Job Safety Analysis Program where hazards and precautions for job processes were identified. The Management by Objectives program, on the other hand, urged units to establish and achieve injury and illness incidence rate goals. During the '80s, total quality was applied to safety management and employee participation in the program was initiated with the creation of safety-and-health committees.
