"I'm sorry, but we're laying you off."(downsizing for physician's assistants)(Editorial)

Article Abstract:

Physician's assistants (PAs) should be aware that their profession may experience the economic downturns and possible downsizing that registered nurses and other health care professionals experienced in previous years. Many professionals have been affected by corporate cost cutting through out the nation and few Americans are optimistic about a change in the downsizing trend. Though the field is rapidly growing, changes in health care industry financing may bring an end to job security for PAs.

Physician views on the PA profession

Article Abstract:

Industry observers expect that the physician assistant (PA) profession will need to reposition itself to ensure viability in the new health care market. PAs should portray themselves not as competitors or replacements for doctors but as information sources and role models. As changes in the health care market continue, new professional relationships between physicians and PAs will become necessary.
