Immunologic and Virologic Effects of Subcutaneous Interleukin 2 in Combination With Antiretroviral Therapy: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Article Abstract:
Combining interleukin 2 (IL-2) with other AIDS drugs appears to be more effective than the AIDS drugs alone. This was the conclusion of researchers who randomly assigned 78 HIV patients to take AIDS drugs only or AIDS drugs plus IL-2. Those who took AIDS drugs plus IL-2 had greater immune recovery and greater viral suppression compared to those who only took AIDS drugs. However, IL-2 caused many side effects and further research is needed to determine whether it will improve survival rates.

Discontinuation of Anticytomegalovirus Therapy in Patients With HIV Infection and Cytomegalovirus Retinitis
Article Abstract:
Some HIV patients who are taking highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) can stop taking drugs to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection of their retina. CMV infection is a common complication of HIV infection. Researchers analyzed the rate of CMV reactivation in 14 HIV patients with CMV retinitis who were taking HAART. None of the patients had a reactivation of CMV infection in their eye or anywhere else when they stopped taking drugs for CMV infection.

Three- versus four-drug antiretroviral regimens for the initial treatment of HIV-1 infection: A randomized controlled trial
Article Abstract:
The safety/efficacy of 3-drug versus 4-drug regimens for initial treatment of HIV-1 infection are compared. It is demonstrated that there is no significant differences, over 3 years, in safety/efficacy between the 3-drug versus 4-drug antiretroviral regimens for the initial treatment of HIV-1 infection.
