Increased body mass index does not alter response to initial highly active antiretroviral therapy in HIV-1-infected patients

Article Abstract:

The effect of body mass index (BMI) on virologic and immunologic response in previously antiretroviral therapy-naive (ART-naive) patients initiating therapy was evaluated. The results indicated that increased BMI was not associated with decreased virologic and immunologic responses to initial highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), and responses were equivalent and within expected ranges between normal weight patients, overweight patients and obese patients at 3 to 9 months of observation.

Use of the serologic testing algorithm for recent HIV seroconversion (STARHS) to identify recently acquired HIV infections in men with early syphilis in Los Angeles County

Article Abstract:

The contribution of the ongoing syphilis epidemic to incident HIV infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) is evaluated by applying serologic testing algorithm for recent HIV seroconversion (STARHS) to stored blood specimens of men diagnosed with early syphilis. A high rate of HIV acquisition occurring among this group of MSM with early syphilis in comparison to the percentage of MSM newly diagnosed with HIV in Los Angeles County is suggested.

HIV prevalence and undiagnosed infection among a community sample of gay men Scotland

Article Abstract:

Self-complete questionnaires and testing of oral fluid samples were used to examine HIV prevalence among men in gay bars in Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland. The high level of undiagnosed infection and incorrect assumptions of status calls for urgent HIV prevention efforts.
