Increases in HIV diagnoses--29 states, 1999-2002
Article Abstract:
The number of American men who have HIV infection increased seven percent between 1999 and 2002, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The number of gay men who have HIV infection increased 17% during that time. This may correspond to an increase in syphilis cases as well as increases in risky sexual behavior.

HIV diagnoses among injection-drug users in states with HIV surveillance -- 25 states, 1994-2000
Article Abstract:
The number of drug addicts who are diagnosed with HIV infection dropped 42% between 1994 and 2000 in the 25 US states that provide data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This occurred in both sexes and all races. Nevertheless, 65% of all HIV-infected drug addicts are African-American.

Soft Tissue Infections Among Injection Drug Users--San Francisco, California, 1996-2000
Article Abstract:
The number of patients treated for a soft tissue infection at San Francisco General Hospital increased over 100% between 1996 and 2000. These infections are commonly caused by injection drug abuse, and occur in as many as one-third of all intravenous drug addicts.
