Incremental treatment costs in National Cancer Institute-sponsored clinical trials

Article Abstract:

Doctors and hospitals spend about 6.5% more on cancer patients who are enrolled in clinical trials than on cancer patients who are not, according to a study of 1,628 cancer patients. This added up to $16 million more in 1999 for all clinical trials sponsored by the US National Cancer Institute. More money was spent on cancer patients who died while participating in a clinical trial than on other cancer patients who died.
