Inhibiting interspecies coaggregation of plaque bacteria with a cranberry juice constituent
Article Abstract:
Components in cranberry juice appear to inhibit the adhesion of plaque-causing bacteria in the mouth, and may reduce plaque formation and gum disease. Researchers grew oral bacteria species in test tubes and induced aggregation between bacterial pairs, then added a component of cranberry juice. The additive inhibited bacterial adhesion in 58% of the bacterial pairs tested. Gram-negative bacteria were particularly susceptible to the effects of cranberry juice extract. The high sugar content in cranberry juice beverages would likely contribute to plaque formation, but an extract of the fruit should be researched as a possible oral hygiene product.
