International Conference Considers Health Needs of the Rural Elderly

Article Abstract:

Doctors discussed ways to improve the health of elderly people at the First International Conference on Rural Aging in June, 2000. The conference was sponsored by the UN Programme on Ageing, the World Health Organization, and the International Association of Gerontology. The resulting document called A Plan of Action on Rural Aging in the 21st Century will be incorporated into the UN's International Plan of Action on Ageing in 2002. The biggest problem is that about 60% of the world's elderly live in rural areas where health care services are not easily accessible..In developing nations, clean water, good nutrition, and sanitation are also important.
