Interplay of genes and environment found in adolescents' alcohol abuse

Article Abstract:

Substance use during adolescence can lead to addiction, mental health problems, and other difficulties in adulthood, hence researchers are looking for ways to prevent smoking, drinking, and drug use in children and teenagers. A study shows that genes can convey vulnerability or propensity for developing a particular behavior and individuals having siblings who drank alcohol were more likely to drink themselves than those with siblings who were not alcohol users.

Genetic link found for premature birth risk

Article Abstract:

Researchers have found a genetic link in African American women that increases the risk of preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), which is a leading cause of preterm birth. The new finding would help to explain why African American women in the United States are nearly twice as likely to have a baby born prematurely as white women, identify those women who are at risk and guide researchers in developing therapeutic interventions.

Gene fusion found in prostate cancer

Article Abstract:

A study reported that ERG is the most commonly overexpressed oncogene in prostate cancer and it is suggested that fusion of ERG to TMPRSS2 might be the cause of this overexpression. Researchers reveal that androgen treatment greatly increased ERG protein production in cell lines carrying the TMPRSS2:ERG gene fusion.
