Is the Saving Lives public health agenda failing?

Article Abstract:

Mixed views continue to be expressed in the UK about the government's 'Saving Lives: Our Healthier Nation' white paper. Some observers feel that this public health agenda is not really having an impact in practice. They identify a lack of flexibility in implementing it and insufficient investment in terms of funding and energy. Others are more positive, stating that the white paper is a valuable opportunity for nurses to make decisions about services based on a strategy that produces a social model of health that can be adopted by other professionals. They emphasize that the impact of changes in public health policy can take many years to become visible.

What's the point of ... public health?

Article Abstract:

There are mixed views among nurses in the UK about the nature of public health and about its importance to nursing practice. Public health is involved with seeking and addressing fundamental causes of poor health and taking action to ensure that people can improve their health easily. Multi-sectorial working is vital to successful public health promotion. Within nursing, public health activity is most often linked with infection control nursing and community nursing work, especially health visiting.
