Islets break off from the mainland
Article Abstract:
A generous source of insulin-producing cells is found in the pancreas, raising hopes for transplantation therapies for diabetes. Diabetes is caused by a failure of the endocrine beta cells in the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas to produce the hormone insulin in the amounts required by the body and the encouraging success of the Edmonton protocol, in which whole islets are transplanted from cadavers, has provided hope that a true cure for diabetes may exist.

Prolonged diabetes reversal after intraportal xenotransplantation of wild-type porcine islets in immunosuppressed nonhuman primates
Article Abstract:
A study of the reversal of diabetes for more than 100 d in cynomolgus macaques after intraportal transplantation of cultured islets from genetically unmodified pigs without Gal-specific antibody manipulation is illustrated. These observations led to hypothesize that immunosuppressive therapy targeting T cells would allow functional survival of intraportally transplanted wild-type porocine islets in diabetic NHPs.

Reversal of insulin-dependent diabetes using islets generated in vitro from pancreatic stem cells
Article Abstract:
Pancreatic ductal epithelial cells have been isolated from non-diabetic mice and grown in vitro. When implanted in diabetic mice, insulin-dependent diabetes was reversed.
