Large cystic granulosa cell tumor: case report
Article Abstract:
A 42-year-old woman began noticing an increase in the size of her abdomen for six months but chose not to seek medical care. The woman was found dead in her apartment with an abdomen measuring 66 inches around (168 centimeters). The woman feared going to the doctor and could not be persuaded by family members. Before autopsy, 20 gallons of fluid was removed from the abdomen. Autopsy revealed a right cystic ovarian tumor measuring 22 inches (56 centimeters) in diameter and one to two centimeters thick. The tumor plus the fluid together weighed 170 pounds (77 kilograms). Although other organs were displaced by the tumor, there was no evidence the tumor had spread to other areas of the body. The diagnosis was large granulosa cell tumor. Granulosa cell tumors are tumors derived from the granulosa layer of the ovarian membrane. They are known to grow to an extremely large size. This is thought to be the largest granulosa cell tumor ever reported. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Blood pressure, urine protein levels, and vanillylmandelic acid levels remained within normal ranges. She delivered a full-term, healthy, 3,310-gram infant.
