Leap of faith

Article Abstract:

Up to 21 million people in Africa are affected by AIDS, with about 2 million people in Uganda suffering from the illness. British nurse Ruth Sims established the 3.5 million pounds sterling Mildmay Centre AIDs hospice in Uganda in 1991, after she realised a large number of London AIDs suffers were of African origin. The facilities include a hostel which can house up to 48 patients. Training is carried out by nurses from the Macmillan Cancer Relief organisation, as well as the Overseas Development Administration of the UK.

Bug in the system

Article Abstract:

Gabrielle Page was diagnosed as having hepatitis C in October 1994, which she claims she was infected with by a blood transfusion carried out in August 1991, one month before the UK began screening blood products for hepatitis C. The condition can lead to liver cancer and cirrhosis of the liver, and Page currently suffers from 'bone-weary' fatigue. Page is currently campaigning to raise awareness of the condition.

A forum for discontent: a trust is imposing an elected staff forum on unionised health workers, claiming that the union does not properly represent trust staff. Is this the thin end of the wedge?

Article Abstract:

The North Downs Community Trust has been accused by unions of acting like dictators because they have imposed an elected staff forum on its 2,300 employees. The staff forum concept originated from the previous year's pay dispute, and trust personnel director Liz Buckle has denied that the forum is a way of punishing the unions for not accepting the initiall pay deal.
