Learning from the experiences of mental health nurses
Article Abstract:
Mental health nurses reported poor experiences of clinical supervision in a study which examined stress in the profession. Their experience is relevant to the broader situation as clinical supervision has to be perceived as useful to be effective. Thirteen nurses in the interview group of 28 did not have clinical supervision, and 11 nurses found it unhelpful. The nurses described the supervisory structure and the personal and professional characteristics of the supervisor which they would have found helpful, and they listed the needs which they wanted clinical supervision to address.

Hand-picked recruits
Article Abstract:
There is increasing concern about the recruiting and retaining of mental health nurses in the UK. Against this background, it seems appropriate to undertake research into why people choose mental health nursing as a career and what aspects of the job particularly appeal to them. It has already been established that those who consider mental health nursing are interested in working with people, are attracted by aspects of human behaviour and have often had previous contact with people who have mental health problems.

Who becomes a mental health nurse?: Mental health nurses come to the profession with a diverse range of life experiences
Article Abstract:
There has been concern about recruitment and retention in mental health nursing. A study of mental health nurses was commissioned by the Department of Health. They were asked about the ethnic group, education and training, paid employment, voluntary work and child care. The findings provide an indication of the characteristics of those entering mental health nursing which will be useful in future recruitment and retention campaigns.
