Learning to approach patients' sexuality as part of holistic care

Article Abstract:

Many patient care plans fail to include assessment for sexuality, while others take a misguided approach to issues relating to sexuality. Nurses who aim to take a holistic attitude to patient care need to be comfortable with the issue of patient sexuality, which also implies that they have to be aware of their own sexuality. It is important that nurses identify areas of their own sexuality where they feel uncertain and consider their developmental and educational needs in these areas.

Several sexual stereotypes have existed for some years but are largely become irrelevent to today's society. These sterotypes however have contributed to how men and women view each other. Article Abstract:

A recent Heathrow report called on nurses to coordinate support workers instead of undertaking physical tasks, and to promote holistic care. An opposing view that compartmentalises holistic care is presented.
