Lidocaine for lumbar punctures: a help not a hinderance

Article Abstract:

Injecting a local anesthetic before performing a spinal tap in young children does not appear to interfere with the procedure. Researchers randomly assigned 100 children under age 3 to have a local anesthetic injected or not before having a spinal tap. Injecting the anesthetic did not increase the number of attempts needed to obtain cerebrospinal fluid, and while taps in the anesthesia group were more likely to contain red blood cells, this had no practical effects. Therefore, local anesthetic is recommended to reduce the pain of the procedure.
