Lipodystrophy in HIV-infected children is associated with high viral load and low CD4+-lymphocyte count and CD4+-lymphocyte percentage at baseline and use of protease inhibitors and stavudine
Article Abstract:
Protease inhibitors can cause changes in body fat distribution in HIV-infected children just as they do in HIV-infected adults. These changes include loss of fat in the face extremities and an abnormal accumulation of fat on the back of the neck, upper back, and trunk.

Body composition and metabolic changes in antiretroviral-naive patients randomized to didanosine and stavudine vs. abacavir and lamivudine
Article Abstract:
In a substudy of an ongoing multicenter randomized trial, comparisons of body composition and metabolic changes among antiretroviral-naive patients randomly assigned to didanosine and stavudine- (ddlI + d4T) vs. abacavir and lamivudine-(ABC + 3TC) containing regimens were assessed. The metabolic and body composition changes varied according to whether subjects received ddI + d4T or ABC + 3TC.

Body composition in prepubertal children with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection
Article Abstract:
Prepubertal children infected with HIV seem to lose fat-free mass (FFM), and those with growth failure (GF) also show a loss of body cell mass (BCM). This was the conclusion of a study of 34 prepubertal children with HIV infection and 52 healthy children. Body fat mass (FM) seemed untouched by the HIV infection. In children without GF, the boys with HIV infection and normal growth had a loss of FFM, but not the girls. The attack on FFM and BCM while leaving the FM relatively untouched is similar to the action observed in adults with AIDS wasting syndrome.
