Local people threaten chimp sanctuary

Article Abstract:

Local people in the Carignan, Quebec, Canada area are threatening a chimp sanctuary after an article announced that AIDS came from chimpanzees. The people believe they may become infected by the refuge chimps, which were once used for biomedical research, including HIV vaccine trials. It is estimated that 1400 chimps are being used for biomedical research in the US and will in time need retirement homes. HIV infection is not fatal to chimps, is eliminated from their bodies within a few years, and they can live as long as 50 years.

Janet Rowley

Janet Rowley, a Chicago octogenarian is the first scientist to study the abnormal chromosomes in leukemia cells, which can be used to trigger a large number of incurable diseases including cancer. She has been a successful woman balancing her life well between her career and the needs of her family and thus owns a lab, which focuses on the occurrence of the chromosomes helpful in triggering tumors.

Article Abstract:

Ben Barres, a neuroscientist at Stanford University discusses the discrimination women's face and the difficulty he came across being a women in completing his MD from Dartmouth University and a neurology residency at Cornell University. Barres criticized the program of National Institutes of Health (NIH) for giving awards only to men, compelling the agency to revise the scheme.
