Local people threaten chimp sanctuary
Article Abstract:
Local people in the Carignan, Quebec, Canada area are threatening a chimp sanctuary after an article announced that AIDS came from chimpanzees. The people believe they may become infected by the refuge chimps, which were once used for biomedical research, including HIV vaccine trials. It is estimated that 1400 chimps are being used for biomedical research in the US and will in time need retirement homes. HIV infection is not fatal to chimps, is eliminated from their bodies within a few years, and they can live as long as 50 years.
