Long-term effects of indomethacin prophylaxis in extremely-low-birth-weight infants

Article Abstract:

Giving extremely premature newborn babies indomethacin does not appear to prevent neurological damage even though it reduces the risk of brain hemorrhage and a birth defect called patent ductus arteriosus. In a study of 574 babies who took indomethacin or a placebo, half the babies in both groups died or developed neurological damage.

Caffeine therapy for apnea of prematurity

Article Abstract:

Randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial of caffeine is conducted to explore the short- and long-term efficacy and safety of methylxanthine therapy in infants with very low birth weight. The results have shown that caffeine therapy for apnea of prematurity reduces the rate of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in infants with very low birth weight.

Long-term effects of caffeine therapy for apnea of prematurity

Article Abstract:

A randomized, placebo-controlled trial of caffeine to study short- and long-term efficacy and safety of methylxanthines therapy used for apnea of prematurity in infants with very low birth weight is conducted. The therapy was found to improve the rate of survival without neurodevelopment disability at 18 to 21 months in infants.
