Bipolar coagulation of the umbilical cord in complicated monochorionic twin pregnancy

Article Abstract:

Bipolar coagulation can be used to terminate a non-viable fetus that is threatening the survival of its twin fetus. This technique closes the umbilical cord and cuts off the blood supply to the non-viable fetus. It was used in 10 pregnant women and resulted in the births of 8 healthy babies.

Complicated monochorionic twin pregnancies: experience with bipolar cord coagulation

Article Abstract:

The use of bipolar cord coagulation to selectively terminate one fetus in a twin pregnancy is described. This technique essentially cauterizes the umbilical cord, which caused blood to stop flowing in the cord.

Long-term neurodevelopment outcome after intrauterine laser treatment for severe twin-twin transfusion syndrome

Article Abstract:

Intrauterine laser treatment may be a very effective prenatal treatment for twin-twin transfusion syndrome, according to a study of 89 babies. Sixty-nine of the babies (78%) had developed normally at two years of age. Twin-twin transfusion syndrome occurs when blood is preferentially shunted from one baby to the other. This is caused by abnormal blood vessels in the placenta, which can be destroyed by a laser. Without treatment, 90% of all babies affected by this syndrome will die.
