Resin-bonded fixed partial dentures: a review of three decades of progress
Article Abstract:
Resin-bonded fixed partial dentures (RBFPDs) have evolved in the three decades since they were first developed, but they still present technical difficulties. All of the bonding techniques have drawbacks. Despite extensive research into bonding techniques, one-quarter of RBFPDs fail within four years. However, new materials and techniques are constantly being introduced. These may provide longer-lived results. Proper case selection and appropriate tooth preparation may minimize the odds of failure. Despite its drawbacks, the RBFPD remains a useful, conservative alternative to the fixed partial denture.

Restoration or crown?
Article Abstract:
Many insurance companies readily accept a dentist's decision to do an intracoronal amalgam filling or place a full crown on a tooth, but are reluctant to pay for more conservative choices such as extracoronal onlays or partial crowns. Other companies are reluctant to pay for full crowns. There are instances when onlays are the better choice both short- and long-run, and there are situations which should clearly call for a partial crown. Some of the criteria for deciding are extent of damage, anticipation of future gum recession, esthetic appearance, and strength of restoration.
