Medicare HMO pilot stalls: Denver lawsuit raises question

Article Abstract:

Denver, Colorado health maintenance organizations are suing to block a government study on competitive bidding and Medicare payments. A US District Court will have a hearing about the pilot project June 12, 1997. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell of Colorado has also introduced legislation to rescind funding for the study because he says it will exempt the Denver area from any changes to Medicare rules Congress will adopt in the next three years.

N.Y. HMO will pay for sign language interpreters

Article Abstract:

Oxford Health Plans will provide its patients with sign language interpreters, after patients complained that they were not receiving adequate communication from health professionals and an investigation revealed that the health maintenance organization had failed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The act requires that those who need interpreters in order to understand medical procedures should have them.
