Memories of missing Abbie

Article Abstract:

The snatching of three-hour-old Karli Hawthorne from a maternity unit in Essex, England, revived painful memories, according to midwife Karen Humphries. Her daughter Abbie was snatched in 1994 from the maternity unit at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, England, and was missing for 16 days. Abbie had not been well cared for by her abductor, and this came as a shock to her parents. However, she fed well and did not appear unhappy. The family had to endure a great deal of media attention for many months after her return.

When the past is a foreign country: Thousands of child migrants to the colonies and their descendants are still battling for access to information on their past

Article Abstract:

MP David Hinchliffe and colleagues on the health select committee are looking into the plight of child migrants. He will meet former migrants, their families and government officials in Australia and New Zealand. The main impetus for sending children abroad was to help relieve the poverty, deprivation and appalling living conditions many of the children lived in. The practice continued until 1967, but the stories of the migrants did not emerge until the late 1980s.
