Mental health problems among adults in tsunami-affected areas in Southern Thailand

Article Abstract:

The prevalence of symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression was assessed among individuals residing in areas affected by the tsunami in Southern Thailand on December 26, 2004. Elevated rates of symptoms of PTSD, anxiety and depression were reported 8 weeks after the disaster among the survivors, with higher rates for anxiety and depression than PTSD symptoms, and nine months after, the rates of symptoms decreased but were still elevated.

Factors associated with poor mental health among Guatemalan refugees living in Mexico 20 years after civil conflict

Article Abstract:

Many refugees from civil wars may experience mental health problems for a long time, according to a survey of 170 Guatemalans who moved to the Mexican state of Chiapas during the 1980s. Twelve percent had symptoms of post-traumatic syndrome, half had symptoms of anxiety, and 39% had symptoms of depression. About 46,000 Guatemalan refugees live in Chiapas.

Mental Health, Social Functioning, and Attitudes of Kosovar Albanians Following the War in Kosovo

Article Abstract:

The war in Kosovo has had a significant impact on the mental health of the population. In a survey of 1,358 Kosovar Albanians 15 years or older in 558 randomly selected households, 17% had symptoms of a mental disturbance according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
