Merits, Flaws of Live Virus Flu Vaccine Debated
Article Abstract:
The FDA has put a live influenza vaccine on hold, possibly because of concerns that it might mutate into a more dangerous virus. Three viral genes were changed so the virus would not be able to reproduce in the warmer temperatures of the lower respiratory tract. However, it can reproduce in the cooler upper airways, where it stimulates the immune system more effectively than inactivated vaccine. It can be given as a nasal spray and is very effective in preventing influenza. But there are concerns that it could combine with wild-type virus to form a new virus that people have no resistance to.
