Michigan health plans financially healthy, study finds

Article Abstract:

Health plans in Michigan are performing well, according to a study conducted by the Michigan State Medical Society. "Evaluation of Michigan Health Plans" reported an increase in physician participation and patient enrollment in health maintenance organizations and reliance on point-of-service plans. The study, which was based on surveys of health plans and reports filed with the state Insurance Bureau of Public Health, indicates that Michigan health plans spend a greater percentage of their premiums on direct patient care than the national average.

Oregon's silver lining

Article Abstract:

The passage of much-disputed physician-assisted suicide Ballot Measure 16, the Oregon Death with Dignity Act, in 1994 has brought people on both sides of the issue together to improve end-of-life care. Although the measure's implementation has been delayed in court, its passage has increased awareness of the needs of dying patients. The debate surrounding the measure has created greater interest in hospice care, supportive care, and end-of-life care educational seminars.

Medicine ponders effects of Michigan suicide law

Article Abstract:

Michigan physicians are assessing the implications of the state's new assisted-suicide law. The new law deems felonious any attempt to help another person take his life. Those convicted could spend four years in prison and pay a $2,000 fine. The Michigan State Medical Society has not taken an official position on the ruling, but society members are concerned that the law will interfere with traditional pain management strategies, especially those that facilitate death.
