Endothelins
Article Abstract:
Endothelins, especially endothelin 1, play an important role in regulating blood vessel constriction. Other roles include nerve cell conduction, and stimulation of hormone production. Endothelins are produced in many types of cells, in particular the cells lining blood vessels. Endothelins produced by these cells exert their effect by being taken up by the smooth muscle cells of the blood vessel wall lying directly beneath them. Their actions are modulated by complex interactions with many other substances, and they in turn modulate the actions of yet other substances. Endothelins are produced in response to lack of oxygen and the tissue damage that results from lack of oxygen. Their actions are partly responsible for the tissue damage that occurs as a result of heart attacks, heart failure, lung and kidney disease, and stroke. A thorough understanding of their role may permit intervention to prevent their adverse effects.

Middle Ages (1000-1400): Tapestry
Article Abstract:
It was common in the Middle Ages for wealthy people to commission tapestries to decorate the bare stone walls of their homes. Tapestry weaving was a firmly established commercial operation, requiring a number of very highly developed skills. Tapestries were very valuable, and they were therefore looked after carefully, ensuring that many still survive today. Tapestries are particularly associated with battle scenes, but tapestries also give a fascinating insight into many other aspects of life in the Middle Ages.
