Misplaced iron in kwashiorkor
Article Abstract:
A comparative study of 50 children with kwashiorkor, six children with marasmus and 12 well-nourished children at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa, reveals the harmful impact of free radical injuries in the growth and progression of kwashiorkor in children. While marasmic and healthy subjects were free from any radical promoting iron, almost 60% of the children with kwashiorkor had non-protein-bound iron in their plasmas, revealing the need for the removal of this free iron occurrence to decrease mortality rates among children.

The effect of withdrawal of food iron fortification in Sweden as studied with phlebotomy in subjects with genetic hemochromatosis
Article Abstract:
The impact of the Jan 1, 1995 withdrawal of the iron fortification of food in Sweden was examined. Results showed that, among 16 men observed for the study, iron absorption was significantly reduced when iron fortification was withdrawn. The study suggests that target groups, such as menstruating females, are likely to experience a higher prevalence of iron deficiency without iron fortification of food. Meanwhile, people with genetic hemochromatosis will accelerate into clinical disease at a slower rate.

Factors affecting iron status in non-pregnant women from urban South Finland
Article Abstract:
Four hundred and forty six non-pregnant women from Finland, in the age group between 17 and 50 were surveyed, to assess the iron levels in their blood. Frequent menstrual cycle, continued menstrual blood loss and donation of blood decrease the iron content. A higher rate of blood loss further reduces the iron content. An appropriate diet, physical exercises and the consumption of multivitamins prevent iron loss.
